Monsanto Settles Nitro, WV Agent Orange Cases.
A $93 million settlement was reached with residents who said Monsanto polluted their community by burning waste from production of the defoliant Agent Orange.
The settlement sets up a 30-year medical monitoring program at a local hospital and allows people who lived, worked, or attended school in the Nitro area during the period covered by the lawsuit to apply for benefits, according to the St. Louis-based company. It said the settlement will resolve all pending litigation as well as class actions filed in West Virginia.
Free professional cleaning of about 4,500 homes will be available and will be paid for by a $9 million fund. Another $21 million fund will pay for eligible class members' medical testing and up to $63 million for the 30-year medical screening program.
"These settlements ensure that both individual and community concerns are addressed and services are made available for the people of Nitro," said Scott Partridge, vice president of Monsanto Company. "We are pleased to resolve this matter and end any concerns about historic operations at the Nitro plant."

One Giant Leap for GMO Labeling.
If you don’t live in California, you may not know that a few months ago history was made in the quest to label genetically modified products. Although California’s Proposition 37 for the labeling of GMO foods lost by a narrow margin, Dave Murphy, founder and executive director of Food Democracy Now, points out that it was a giant leap in the effort for all Americans to be able to know what’s in their food.
“It was the right fight at the right time,” Murphy (who was also the co-chairman of the Prop 37 campaign) told Organic Connections. “It shone a spotlight on what I think is one of the greatest and worst injustices of our times. It made the issue of labeling GMO foods a national issue. It raised awareness on a situation that most Americans had no idea about. Today, people are clamoring for labeling genetically engineered food all across the country.”
